  IN MEMORY PROGRAM

Since the Vietnam War ended, thousands of Vietnam veterans have suffered due to Agent Orange exposure, PTSD and other illnesses as a result of their service. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) believes all those who served in Vietnam should be honored and remembered for their service. The In Memory program enables the families and friends of those who came home and later died the opportunity to have them be forever memorialized.

The plaque on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial site in Washington, D.C. that honors these veterans was dedicated in 2004 and reads: In Memory of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service. We honor and remember their sacrifice.

The Wall That Heals will be on display in Lemont Furnace from October 12-15, 2023. As part of the exhibit, local Vietnam Veterans who have passed away after returning home are eligible to have their name and photo as part of the In Memory display at the mobile Education Center. Apply by the September 12, 2023 deadline to have your loved one’s photo on display.

Additional information on the In Memory program and the application form can be found here: In Memory Program

Please consider donating to the Wall That Heals - Fayette County, Pennsylvania 2023 to honor those Vietnam Veterans that sacrificed their lives and thank those that are still living today.  This year commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Volunteer Opportunities

Be an Ambassador

Ambassadors will help with parking at the event, in the information tent and at the mobile education center. The job involves lots of standing and moving around. Volunteers will help greet visitors, find names on The Wall That Heals and answer questions. Ambassadors should be good listeners, willing to engage with everyone and let visitors tell their story.

Volunteers Needed – The Wall That Heals will be open to the public 24 hours from 12 October to 15 October and staffed by volunteers. Volunteers are needed around the clock to greet and assist visitors, should be 18 years old or older, and be able to stand for extended periods. No experience is necessary and volunteer training will be provided. Wear weather-appropriate gear as the exhibit is open rain or shine.

Set Up / Break Down

Volunteers are needed to help set up or break down The Wall That Heals exhibit, which requires some physical labor. Each panel weighs around 80 pounds. Volunteers should be fit, able to climb, lift, use sledgehammer and work outside for six to eight hours. Setting up involves unloading the trailer by hand and assembling The Wall and the mobile Education Center (EC). Breaking down involves disassembling The Wall and loading the trailer by hand.

Ambassadors will help visitors by answering questions and helping find individual names on the memorial. Volunteers will need to attend a training session the day before the event begins.

The exhibit will be open 24 hours a day for four days. Days shifts are typically two to three hours long, while night shifts are between four and six hours.

Ambassadors will be needed between 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 through 2 p.m. on Oct 15, 2023.

In addition to ambassadors, volunteers are needed for assembling the memorial and taking it down afterward.

Assembly begins at 8 a.m on Oct. 11 and will take about six hours.
